Goodbye Kodachrome

In photography news, it's apparently time to say goodbye to Kodachrome.

December 30^th is the last day Kodachrome film will ever be processed on planet Earth. Dwayne's Photo Studio is the only place where Kodachrome films are processed and just has enough chemicals for one more week of processing.

Kodak has stopped producing these unique chemicals that gave images the vibrant look seen in pictures of photography's great like Steve McCurry (famous for the Afghan girl) and Eric Gutmann and others). This happened in 2009, but Dwayne's Photo Studio still had chemicals to go for another year. Yet also their stock has come to an end.

I always feel a little sad when awesome things cease to exist.

Since I have so strongly embraced all things digital, I'm not sure how to feel about this one. But feel free to read the original post and comments at Agent 3Z.

Blender Foundation's "Sintel" - An Achievement for Open Source 3D Animation

Here is a moving and heart-wrenching animated short story that was created with a free and open source program called Blender! The point of the video's publication is to showcase what the program can do.

"Sintel" is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.

This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world.

Each year, Photoshop World launches with a different theme and this year was no exception. "Rock Concert" was part of the entry passes, posters, decorations and even the keynote. An authentic rock concert launched the 3-day conference in grand style. Scott Kelby and the Pixel Benders performed a 2 song set to a backdrop of strobes, smoke, spotlights, and huge amps and speakers. KISS-like costumes and makeup completed the parody as they belted out "I Wanna Photoshop All Night and Retouch Every Day" while a packed house went wild.

I'll talk about today's sessions in a later post.

Are Physical Photographs Dead?

I've been thinking something about paper photographs for a long time that I wasn't sure how to articulate. I like digital photographs better than physical ones. Unless I have an empty frame and a spot on the wall already picked out, I don't see a need for paper. For a long time, I've been alone in this, but this is starting to become more popular. Deane at Gadgetopia.com wrote a pretty detailed description of the differences between the way the general user thought of digital photos when they first came out and how we are all starting to think of them. Star Wars as a Silent Film

First the video, with an explanation to follow.

As you may have noticed here, I've mentioned Star Wars a number of times before. If there is one single film in history that has more actively fueled the fire of fan-made films --and by relation, all home video-- then I'd be very surprised. Some of these homages are funny parody, some are just practice and some approach the level of real art. I love them all.

The video linked above uses only footage from the original film, with a very specific filter (I'd assume) that gives it the right silent film look. I don't know all the technical details, but the appearance is spot on. It's in black-and-white, but also has a layer of scratches, muting and noise added to give it old style film resonance. Additionally, the frame speed was slightly sped up in most of the action sequences, giving it a much more herky-jerky movement (technical term, ahem) to the actors. Stylized dialog cards are added for each spoken line. I like that these have the Imperial logo at the bottom and that there are a few misspellings, perhaps purposeful.

The best possible detail used to give this video an authentic silent film theme is the soundtrack, played on an old-fashioned grand piano by itself. If you listen at the right moment as Luke plummets down the ventilation shaft, a descending chromatic scale plays exactly where it is most expected. The entire package comes together perfectly with the scratchiness of the video and audio in sync. It's funny and beautiful at the same time; a very good job.

More About the HBO Opening Sequence

As a response to my recent post about the opening sequence on HBO, I got the following message from Arco1.

I see you discovered the HBO behind-the-scenes video.

It was a very ambitious intro and was said to be the most expensive and innovative concept at the time, especially for cable TV. History sidebar - HBO was one of the first cable-only networks, and also one of the first to provide something more between movies than just a billboard with Oh God! You Devil starts in 17 minutes 08 seconds.

The original promo was full of amazing effects from start to finish. I remember first seeing it at a trade show, maybe National Assoc. of Broadcasters convention. More amazing is the amount of effort it took to do what can now be done on the desktop in a few hours.

I remember one thing that caught everyone's attention was the light-burst. Today, that moire light pattern is easy to construct in something like Adobe After Effects. Of course, having to construct a miniature physical city or physical "HBO" is no longer necessary either. Numerous add-ons can provide 3D solids or metallic text complete with light glints and shimmer.

The intro seems to be a part of HBO's legacy. I notice they sometimes use the swoop-through-the-city in part of their current bumpers.

If you grew up in the '80s and if you had HBO, then you will recall the opening introduction described below.

Remember that '80s HBO intro where the camera went from a city apartment, through Alec Baldwin's Beetlejuice model, and into space, where the HBO logo was full of lasers? It was pretty great, even when viewed through my home's fuzzy, accidental HBO reception with the knowledge that it would just be followed by another showing of Oh God! You Devil.

Never underestimate the ability of video to tell a story or to put you into an environment. The world is watching the news of the earthquake from Haiti right now. Here is a video player on CNN's web site that gives you the ability to pan and turn the angle of your view as the truck that the camera is sitting on rolls down the street.

I apologize that the video automatically plays, but there doesn't seem to be a setting I can control to change this. Normally, I would just link to the video in that case. ~~The content of the video is important enough AND the technology is cool enough that I posted it anyhow~~. Having a video simply autoplay is just too obnoxious.

I don't know if it's an original quote, but George Lucas once said The secret to film is that it's an illusion. And it's certainly the truth. At ColorBurst Video, we are big fans of magic and know a few tricks of sleight-of-hand that we've practiced in addition to the special effects. That's why a recent article on Wired.com caught my attention and I wanted to share it with you. It features incites from Teller of Penn and Teller, along with some video clips of their magic act.

For Teller (that's his full legal name), magic is more than entertainment. He wants his tricks to reveal the everyday fraud of perception so that people become aware of the tension between what is and what seems to be. Our brains don't see everything—the world is too big, too full of stimuli. So the brain takes shortcuts, constructing a picture of reality with relatively simple algorithms for what things are supposed to look like. Magicians capitalize on those rules. Every time you perform a magic trick, you're engaging in experimental psychology, Teller says. If the audience asks, How the hell did he do that? then the experiment was successful. I've exploited the efficiencies of your mind.

Camera Trick Challenge

It's clearly a viral video, but they aren't lying when they warn you at the beginning that it hasn't been edited in any way. The answer to how this one was done has already been posted in the comments and video responses on YouTube. But I urge you to watch the short video all the way through (1:43) and see if you can't reason out how it was done. It's not that hard, but it is very clever on their part. If you dig a bit, you'll find that lots of musicians of every skill level post clips of themselves online. The video and audio quality varies all over the map and that's okay. But imagine if some genius takes as many of the clips as they can find and puts them together into one overdubbed sampled funk-jam that is as beautiful to listen to as it is fascinating to watch. Well, if your imagination is like mine, you probably wouldn't have reached this far. Watch as Kutiman mixes YouTube, and not just for one little song but seven! When you see genius like this, be sure to smile. Who comes up with this?

Time-Lapse

The use of time-lapse photography has been around for over a century and creates a truly eye-catching effect as the characters on the screen go through normal motions at speeds unachievable at human speed --or animal speed as the case may be.

According to Wikipedia:

Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby each film frame is captured at a rate much slower than it will be played back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing.

But most people make the incorrect assumption that you need to have an important or interesting subject --such as a growing plant or a building in construction-- to really make a stunning use of this technique. But simple and everyday moments can be captured in shots and become a treasured moment that is meaninful and fun to watch.

I could watch this all day. Certainly, the music adds something as well, but the video by itself is interesting. Also see this baby eating a strawberry which is cute, but needs some music too.

George Lucas in Love-- All Over Again

I've mentioned it before, but George Lucas in Love is one of those short but epic masterpieces of comedy gold that bears mentioning again. If you haven't seen it in a while (or at all) enjoy.

I ran into this again recently on Shamus Young's blog, where even he admits that it has been linked to hell and back, but sometimes you have to resurrect those old simple favorites. Shamus also links to his own 2006 script treatment of what Star Wars would have likely looked like had it come out in this decade rather than the '70s. The main point being that movie executives would take the script and try and 'sexy' it up a bit to make it the smash blockbuster that they really want. It's worth four and a half laughs.

It's arguable by some that the Star Wars films severely changed the movie industry and created the "blockbuster-or-bust" attitude prevalent today. Thereby making Shamus' joke all the more cyclical --and profound.

I am sitting in Copango's "Power of Color" enthralled by the fantastic images projected on the 30-foot screens around the room.

As usual, each hour has seven different learning opportunities to choose from. At 1pm, I'll join Scott Kelby for his "7-Point System.". "Mastering Color Curves" is my choice for the 2pm session. Then it's off to the airport for home and family.

PS World - Friday Late Afternoon

Outside, the Vegas temperature has 3-digits, but inside the Mandallay Bay convention center Photoshop World is cool and very busy.

Amazing is the term that comes to mind as I sit in the 2nd of 3 of Harlan's session on Photoshop for video. These sessions alone were worth the trip for me.

Another pass through vendor exhibits enlarged the blisters on my feet and revealed several "cool tools" I missed yesterday. (For instance, for the price of a 'basic transportation' used car, you can own a laser that etches any image you could print into wood, leather, plastic, whatever.....)

I'm off to the next of Harlan's sessions.

Vendor exhibits: Nikon was showing a broad line of cameras and lenses, .and Epson showcased some gorgeous large printers. Drobo was there with an interesting harddrive storage technology. And I wore a hole in my shoes cruising the booths of maybe another 60 or more vendors. B and H even provided discounts to attendees.

A full slate of evening sessions are now in full swing; Deke McClelland's tutorial on output sharpening being one of the moe popular.

In A World With No Don LaFontaine…

You most likely wouldn't recognize this man's name or face. However, it's possible that with modern movie advertising, he has one of the most recognized VOICES in the world. Dan LaFontaine was the voice-over guy for almost every movie trailer I've ever seen in my entire life. He has a powerful deep voice with a unique character. On Tuesday of this week he died due to complications and illness. The movie trailers will never be the same.

This is one belongs under the "That's-No-Moon-That's-A-Space-Station" folder. As everyone knows, I like Star Wars quite a bit. But even I was a little bug-eyed to see these fan-made clips.

Two Quick Movie Mentions: Iron Man and Indiana Jones

I wanted to quickly note that I've seen two really great films this summer and I wanted to mention my reactions briefly.

IRON MAN

Yeah, this one was surprisingly awesome and I think a lot of people reacted that way. Fans of Marvel Comics have had some ups and downs in the last several years with some good movies and some bad ones. From what I hear, the good has been outweighing the bad with their latest ventures because the powers that be in Hollywood finally decided to let Marvel have total control of their own films. Imagine that!

INDIANA JONES

Do I have to actually come out and say this one was great? Can't it just be a given? Some spectacular work went into this picture. It's not a hindrance to the plot at all that our beloved Indy is now much older. Nor is it a problem that we haven't known his whereabouts for nearly 20 years. In fact, it makes for some interesting character exposition how much he has aged and the fact that much of his adventuring life is supposedly behind him. Also, in the first 20 minutes enough hints are dropped about the intervening time period that you think Of course that's what he's been up to! There are a few surprises too and at the end of the first act there is a special effect BANG that you don't want to miss.

If you haven't heard of Flickr yet, it's one of the best photo community sites available right now that is actually taken seriously by professionals. Certainly there are competitors out there (like Photobucket) but they are usually frequented by MySpace teens.

However, Flickr has not had the technology or infrastructure in place to allow video uploads and sharing, something that their competitors have had a head start with. But that has just changed! Domain Resolving - ColorBurst Video

This is just a quick post to note the fact that as of today, the domains for ColorBurst Video are now resolving to the site rather than redirecting.

Prior to today, when you typed in either - http://www.colorburstvideo.com/ - or - http://www.colorburst-video.com/ - these addresses would redirect to http://colorburst-video.BLOGSPOT.com/. Although the site is still hosted on the same server, the domain will propogate properly.

This is a small technical change, but it will help with our long-term plans. It will be a brand new year for ColorBurst in 2008.

I've got an update on a recent post:

Review: Panasonic Camcorder Features 30GB Hard Drive

I admit that I didn't even know they made these yet, but it makes sense as a natural evolution of video technology.

Here is some more history on the subject:

Hard drive camcorders have actually been around since the '80s. They were first used (somewhat experimentally) by television news crews early in the electronic-news revolution. They were high-end broadcast quality cameras (high-priced) and included -removeable- hard drives. This allowed a news editor to have instant access to the footage without having to transfer from tape to computer. Of course, at that point in history, computer-video editing was in its infancy, and very high-$. Hard-drive technology was still rather fragile - imagine the typical drive bouncing around in the back of the news van speeding back from a breaking story. Video quality equivalent to your current camcorder was a challenge for these $100K+ systems. After some very costly trials, the technology was shelved waiting for more reliable and cheaper stuff.

Video is now more 'democratized' and we are starting to see numerous video formats - several different versions of HD, SD, widescreen, etc. Its not uncommon for some (upper-end) consumer camcoders to be able to switch between US, British, and French video standards, sometimes with the added choices of widescreen and high-def. Some of these choices don't easily translate to a specific tape media. At the same time the internet has eased the problem of transporting the various international television "standards" to other locations. Add to this the much lower cost of reliable drives, and you have a natural migration to consumer camcorders with built-in HDs. The only real limitation to these is the amount of video that can be contained on the drive. I also wonder how many people will be disciplined enough to regularly move the video off their camcorder before they need the space for the next event - Let's see... do I erase Reese's kindergarten graduation, or do I not tape Livvi's first day of school...

What will really be cool is when they offer a consumer version that gives you a choice of tape, HD, or maybe flash-memory card / flash-card HD. Probably late 2008 or early 2009.

This sounds like good news. I'm a bit behind the curve on the knowledge on this one, so I'm glad to get more input from the expert. Now, when will we see more common posts from said expert?

Dual Core 2MB L2 Cache, 2.13 GHz, 1066MHz FSB

Asus P5VD2-MX VIA Motherboard

512MB DDR2 533 Memory Apacer (i would add another 512mb ddr)

512MB Asus EN6200TC512 GeForce 6200 PCI-E 512MB Turbo Cache, TV/DVI

do you guys think that this system is fast enough to hadle tons of video editing? do u have any suggestions of a better computer system for video editing? and do u know a free video editing software that has functions similar to adobe premiere? thanks!

Most video sharing sites make it very difficult to nearly impossible to download a local copy of the video files they are displaying. This is good news for those directors who want to keep their content protected, but bad news for those interested parties who want a local copy for reference, backup source material or outright copyright infringement (not recommended).

Those videophiles and collectors that use Firefox will be interested to know that there are several extensions available that make it easier to manipulate video files on the most common video sharing sites like YouTube, Google Video as well as many others. To get an idea, try the following search on the Mozilla Corporation Firefox Add-ons Site. There are currently over 50 results.

So keep this in mind when you share videos through these sites. They can be downloaded and then archived or re-shared onto a different site. You don't use Firefox? You should! Get it today--

TechCrunch has posted a good list of online photo editors. Since so much sharing of photos is done online or via email, it makes sense to be editing photos online as well. Most of these services work by allowing you to upload your photo to their web platform using a simple upload form. Then editing choices are made through the browser and you download the finished filed. Some of these services also work by connecting to your Flickr account in a two-way integration where you edit and reload the photo direct from your online photos that are already online.

The launch of Picnik a couple of days ago brought us yet another online photo editing tool. Like Fauxto, Picnik uses Flash, whereas most of the earlier editing tools all use Ajax for in-browser editing.

Since all computers come with basic software that rotates, resizes and crops photos, there needs to be a compelling reason to use an online service. Uploading a photo to such a service, editing it and then downloading it back to your hard drive too high of a cost. To compensate for this, most services allow you to transfer the edited photos directly to Flickr, Webshots or other online photo services, saving users the trouble of making round trips uploading and downloading.

I wrote a post not long ago about the rise of pro-sumer video over the last 15 years, and the impact it's making right now on the web video revolution.

Well, this CNET article fortells the coming of a second wave of pro-sumerism... and I think they totally miss the point.

They're talking about evolution of internet video editing tools like eyespot and jumpcut, and asserting that these will open up the exclusive world of video editing to 'the rest of us'...

I'm very suspect of this assertion - Editing is about choices. That takes experience and training. The tools you use to edit are pretty much irrelevant.

Unable to Load Archived Video

The natural point of this site is video editing meets blogging. However, doesn't it make sense to also have some information on video-blogging? To start off with, we can at least point to a good reference on how to begin video blogging.

Comon' every web 2.0 geek has a videoblog - you should have one too! Seriously though, we know it's super simple to put videos up on YouTube and for many people (okay a kabillion people) that works just fine. The nice thing about a videoblog is it's like your own little corner of the Internet. You control how it looks, whether it has ads on it or not, what format(s) the videos are in and how long they are. Plus, because it's built on a blog it has all the advantages of a blog - it's easily found in search engines, it's automatically archived, and it's easy to subscribe to.

CGTalk - Organization and Naming Schemes

Handling video editing projects can become very confusing and difficult if the director does not plan how they are going to organize their project files. David Edmondson, a.k.a. ThreeHams, posted a detailed explanation of how he organizes his files on his computer as he's working on them.

I've noticed something isn't really talked about all that much - organization of files during a project. When you're struggling to meet a deadline at the eleventh hour, you'll realize just how worthwhile all the preparation really is - no overwriting vital files, no searching for files, no duplicate names in subfolders, no -FINAL04.max suffixes. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, and everything (basically) works exactly the way you want.

Sounds like advice we could all use, right? He continues...

What I'd like to see is how other people organize their projects. My scheme started out much uglier and looser than this, and eventually developed over time as I learned how to fix problems I was having. It's very streamlined for the projects I do - about 14-15 minutes of rendered footage, quick rendering times on two computers, lots of external references, and 25-30 minutes with stillframes after editing. The destination is a run of CDs and DVDs.

Dots on the Movie Screen

In older films and movies there were commonly dots or small flashes that appeared in the top-right of the screen. Up until yesterday, I thought these were simply glitches or dust motes. Then I read the following:

According to a list of Frequently Asked Questions originally created for the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies, those dots are cue marks that let the projectionist know that it's time to change reels. Film reels generally range in length from 20 to 22 minutes, so there are several "changeovers" in a feature-length film.

World of Warcraft & Office Space Commercial

The following particular commercial has been making me laugh lately.

The concept is a familiar scene in a movie, Office Space, that almost has a minor cult following, and a familiar scene in this movie has been edited digitally to add scenes from the video game and the cardboard box and discs on the desk. It is pretty seemless. It's even more seemless than the DirectTV & Star Trek commercials and the ones like it that I also find funny.

It was bugging me each time I saw it, as I kept wondering which video game it was that Peter was originally playing. I found the movie and at about the 42 minute mark is when the scene appears and the character was originally playing one of my old favorites and there are cheetos on his desk instead of discs. Check out the quote from IMDb's Memorable Quotes from Office Space (1999) page.

Eighteen Year Old VHS Cassette Not Cooperating

This should be a good lesson to anyone who is confident that their old tapes are going to stand the test of time. This could also be a good lesson to those that scrimp on their media purchases, choosing cheap and easy over quality.

What do you do with a VHS Cassette tape that is eighteen years old and is not properly cooperating as you are attempting to transfer it?

The problem is that the image drops out from time to time. When capturing to my camcorder the image goes scrambled now and then. There is no rhyme or reason to where the video gets scrambled , it happens at different points in the tape each time I attempt to capture.

Creating Light Streaks

If you watch television much at all -- and I know you do -- you have probably seen the latest commercial from Apple for the iPod Nano. Here is the video if you need to catch up a bit.

You can also load it in a larger view by going to Google Video: iPod Nano. I don't know about anyone else, but this makes the Nano look a little bit like a Lightsaber and I immediately wanted to have one after I saw this commercial for the first time.

Then later that very same night, I stumbled upon this tutorial. I felt it important to share this interesting effect and how it was most likely done.
